Rescue Me ID: 18-02-18-00282African Side Neck

Reptile/Amphibian    Age: Adult

Two African Side Neck Turtles - possibly one male and one female. I have had them for over a year and they are awesome. However they were given to me as a gift and I am not home enough to give them the attention they need. They have big personalities and are really great pets. The issue I am having with potential adopters is that they do not have the size tank these Turtles require. They are large, probably around 6-7 inches long and require enough space to be comfortable. They also are African so they will not survive outside in VA's climate. I will give the adopter my water filter, water heater, and basking items.

Rescue Me ID: 18-02-10-00103Ball Python

Reptile/Amphibian    Age: Senior

I am looking to find a new home for my 20 year old ball python. Starting last year he'd displayed increasingly aggressive behavior. I use to hold him frequently but I've lost confidence and do not feel comfortable attempting to hold him without him striking at me. I also do not feel comfortable with having my 3yo twins around him. This is tough for me because he has been with me through so many ups and downs in my life since received as a gift when I was 18. I will include his aquarium and other accessories (heat lamp, water bowl, and plastic cave) to whomever chooses to provide him with a good home. He prefers feeding on live rat/mice but ... (Read More)can eat thawed out frozen rat/mice. If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. I look forward to hearing from you. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting Reptiles & More in Virginia
Reptiles & More can make good pets in Virginia if they match your IifestyIe. Reptiles are interesting animals. Many types of reptiles and amphibians are kept as exotic pets. Snakes, turtles, iguanas, and frogs are popular examples. Keeping a reptile as a pet is a tremendous responsibility. Many reptile owners discover that owning a reptile is not as rewarding as they had hoped. Reptiles do not bond with people the way mammals can, and are sometimes neglected for that reason. Also, many people purchase young, small reptiles without being aware of or prepared for their eventual adult size. For example, Burmese Pythons are often bought as pets when they are about two feet long. However, many do not realize that Burmese Pythons are among the largest snakes in the world, with adults averaging 23 feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds! There is now an established invasive population of Burmese Pythons in Florida due to pet owners releasing the snakes into the wild. Scientists believe these huge snakes will keep spreading out and will one day inhabit one third of the United States! Some owners are not prepared for the long lifespan of a pet reptile. Some species of turtles are known for their extreme longevity. Iguanas can grow to be six feet long and then live for 20 years. Sadly, many captive reptiles suffer from dehydration and kidney problems, poor nutrition, and all other manner of neglect. A person who is truly ready to commit to a reptile pet can alleviate some suffering by adopting an animal rather than purchasing new.

lnteresting Reptiles & More Trivia Low-Cost Virginia Spay & Neuter Clinics
The word Reptile comes from the Latin Repere, which means to creep. In the Florida Everglades, there are over 20,000 non-native reptiles such as Burmese Pythons due to people releasing reptile pets into the wild. Some kinds of turtles can live to be over 100 years old.
