Rescue Me ID: 17-03-23-00306Iguana (female)

Reptile/Amphibian    Age: Young Adult

In November of 2016 I took my daughter to her friend's birthday party on a little farm here in Melbourne. There I found this iguana in a back room of a garage in a bird cage without a heat lamp or any necessities whatsoever. I asked if I could have this iguana and she said yes, so we took her home. (I believe she is a female based on my research). She was very weak and used to let me hold her while mostly keeping her eyes closed, but I believe that is because she was malnourished and lethargic. She has been fed a proper iguana diet and uses a lamp that provides both UVA and UVB lighting, which is essential for her digestion and to avoid MBD ... (Read More)(metabolic bone disease). Since November she has grown a few inches and has gained a great deal of weight, eats regularly and evacuates regularly. Overall she is healthy and spunky. I hold her in a towel now when I'm about to put her in the bathtub to soak, however she is tough to get out of her cage and is more aggressive now that she is healthy. She's obviously had a rough life so far. Recently my young daughter was attacked by a dog, and my focus needs to be fully on her at this time. The person who adopts her needs to have experience with reptiles and also needs to be able to afford her fresh diet each week, not too expensive, maybe 10 dollars a week. Her current cage is made of non-treated pine wood and is 6'H x 4'W x 2'D wide with a storage shelf on the bottom. A large shelf and a ramp have been installed to make it suitable for her needs. I ask that a donation fee of $25-$50, whatever amount you are able to donate, go to this website for the iguana. Her cage and set up would need to be bought separately, I decided to do this so that she won't be taken just for her cage or to be re-sold. The cage was $150 plus the materials we purchased to build onto it,cage accessories, and the lamp set up alone was $70. I just want her to go to a good home where she'll be truly cared for. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting Reptiles & More in Florida
Reptiles & More can make good pets in Florida if they match your IifestyIe. Reptiles are interesting animals. Many types of reptiles and amphibians are kept as exotic pets. Snakes, turtles, iguanas, and frogs are popular examples. Keeping a reptile as a pet is a tremendous responsibility. Many reptile owners discover that owning a reptile is not as rewarding as they had hoped. Reptiles do not bond with people the way mammals can, and are sometimes neglected for that reason. Also, many people purchase young, small reptiles without being aware of or prepared for their eventual adult size. For example, Burmese Pythons are often bought as pets when they are about two feet long. However, many do not realize that Burmese Pythons are among the largest snakes in the world, with adults averaging 23 feet in length and weighing hundreds of pounds! There is now an established invasive population of Burmese Pythons in Florida due to pet owners releasing the snakes into the wild. Scientists believe these huge snakes will keep spreading out and will one day inhabit one third of the United States! Some owners are not prepared for the long lifespan of a pet reptile. Some species of turtles are known for their extreme longevity. Iguanas can grow to be six feet long and then live for 20 years. Sadly, many captive reptiles suffer from dehydration and kidney problems, poor nutrition, and all other manner of neglect. A person who is truly ready to commit to a reptile pet can alleviate some suffering by adopting an animal rather than purchasing new.
